HVAC Diagnostic Tools

HVAC Diagnostic Tools

The acronym HVAC generally refers to a central air system for heating and cooling a building. This usually includes a furnace, blower assembly, an evaporative coil, a compressor and compressor coil, along with the air ducts used to distribute the conditioned air within the building. The term HVAC can also be applied to similar but smaller systems used in residences.

Having the proper HVAC diagnostic tools is important for anyone working in this field who wants to do the job well. Certain equipment is necessary for most HVAC projects, such as air conditioner, air filter, diffuser, boiler, circulation pump, duct material, valves, piping, an HVAC control system, anemometer, manometer, thermometer, digital clamp meter, and gas leak detector.

Air Conditioner

An air conditioner is used to maintain temperature inside by providing or extracting heat.

Most air conditioners provide forced air. These types use air filters placed at the ventilation duct openings for collecting dust, pollen, bacteria, and mold from the circulating air. On the other hand, boilers require a circulation pump, which circulates liquids, gases, or a mixture of liquids and solids in a closed circuit to counteract the friction in piping systems.

Diffuser

A diffuser is an outlet vent that can be used for both all-air and air-water systems in order to ventilate the air while distributing airflow in certain directions. Diffusers are very important diagnostic tools, because indoor spaces can become overly heated or cooled without them.

Duct Material

Ventilation ducts can be made from many different materials, such as polyurethane, fiberglass, phenolic, fabric, and flexible ducting.

Piping

Whereas duct work provides efficient air flow, piping provides efficient water flow.

Piping can be made out of copper, concrete, glass, fiberglass, steel, plastic, and a variety of other materials.

Valves

Valves are also important HVAC diagnostic tools, because they regulate the flow of fluids within the piping system. They work by opening, closing, or partially closing pipelines, which can lead to lower gas and water bills.

HVAC Control System

The HVAC control system is set up at a convenient location in order to permit easy control of the cooling and heating systems.

Manometer

Manometers are used to measure gas and water pressure.

Anemometer

Anemometers are used to measure the airflow velocity.

Thermometer

Thermometers are used for measuring the water and air temperatures.

Digital Clamp Meter

Digital clamp meters are important, because they monitor AC current, AC voltage, and DC voltage.

Gas Leak Detectors

Gas leak detectors prevent combustible gas from escaping the gas heating system. Some are also capable of measuring radon.

Having the proper HVAC diagnostic tools is crucial for efficient performance. The most important equipment to have is the air conditioner, air filter, diffuser, boiler, circulation pump, duct material, valves, piping, an HVAC control system, anemometer, manometer, thermometer, digital clamp meter, and gas leak detector.

Auto Repair and Women

Auto Repair and Women
Courtesy of Daniel Dullum:

“More and more, auto repair garages are seeing the advantages of marketing to the female consumer.

Cruise the Internet, and a site for a garage like Auto Repair & Fuel Systems in West Fargo, N.D., will pop up, exclaiming, “Women love our professional service!”

They’re not alone in that marketing approach. In Wilmington, Del., Christian Porter fixed his friends’ cars as a hobby while he worked full time at MBNA as a project manager in the technology department. While working on the cars of his friends and acquaintances, women confided that they were uncomfortable going to “professional” garages.

“You hear this enough, and you recognize an opportunity,” Porter told the The News Journal of Wilmington and New Castle.

When MBNA announced volunteer severance packages to trim its staff, Porter took the buyout, seized the opportunity and opened his own garage that would cater to women – Everest AutoWorks & Auto Spa – in July 2009. While Porter doesn’t turn away male customers, he estimates that 80 percent of his business comes from women.

Douglas Lee, an official with AAA Mid-Atlantic, said Porter’s strategy is smart because “despite the stereotypes, it’s women who most often decide where a car gets serviced.”

Porter’s plans included car repair workshops for women, something already being done at shops like Ponder’s Auto Repair in Johnson City, Tenn., where owner Brian Ponder presents his “Women on Wheels Seminar,” and at Accurate Auto in Hillsboro, Ore.

Rick Kersey, owner of Accurate Auto, explained to the Hillsboro Argus newspaper that he wanted to “empower” female drivers, especially for encountering roadside emergencies, when finding a reputable mechanic can be a challenge.

“Our main goal is to help educate women in the local community about repairs on their cars and get them more prepared for that unexpected breakdown or emergency,” said Kersey, who began his Women’s Car Care Clinics in April 2010.

Tips For Effective Automotive Transmission Repair

Tips For Effective Automotive Transmission Repair
A car like any other machine is prone to mechanical failures or problems. Transmission problems are the major encountered car problems and thus automobile transmission repair becomes necessary, once such problems come into existence. The automotive transmission repair system of a car is highly complex since there is always a chance of higher glitches and troubles. Thus, it is always recommended to take the help of a professional while doing auto transmission repair of car, but some basic and good tips can help one to resolve the preliminary issues.

The key elements responsible for transmission problems in vehicle are the bell housing, transmission fluid, filters and gears. The result is that either automobile does not move at all or it does not move smoothly. Hence, one must do the simple diagnosis of the automobile to find out the exact problem. Some of the major transmission problems in cars are:

Transmission Fluid Leak
Most of the trouble with a gearbox is caused by fluid related problems. Transmission fluid leak is caused due to several reasons like broken seal, loosening of the filler tube, defective pan gasket and poor installation that can result in damage to the car system. Since, the transmission system is exposed to very high temperatures, it can experience a lot of wear and tear, and there is an eventual break down which can cause the fluid to leak. The transmission fluid change with use of sealant at broken parts keep the system trouble-free and enable the car machinery to work efficiently without any damage.

Transmission Slipping
Transmission Slipping is the second most commonly encountered car transmission problem. It is noticed that nine out of ten times the trouble arises due to irregular increase in engine RPM (Revolution Per Minute), sudden downshifting (i.e. vehicle at high speed abruptly shifted to lower gear without changing the speed) and delayed in vehicle’s acceleration. Thus, one experiences unusual jerking movements in automobile while changing gears. The best alternative to sort out such problems is to regularly check the transmission fluid levels and by repairing or replacing the broken vacuum lines of the engine.

Overheating
Overheating is another major problem that should be avoided to counter the transmission problems in cars and other similar automobiles. Continuous stop and go in heavy traffic or carrying heavy weight in the vehicle triggers the temperature of the engine, causing blockage in the fluid cooler lines. Moreover, it may even bend the metal parts and hardens the rubber seals of the transmission system, creating fluid leaks. Thus, appropriate measures should be taken to overcome the overheating of engines.

Most of the automotive transmission shop in Calgary, Canada, provides the complete auto transmission kits at affordable prices to diagnose and resolve the common vehicle transmission issues. Since, any kind of automotive transmission repair cost is highly expensive, so one should use these kits to sort out the problem.
